I'm No Martha Stewart . . .

Since Ryan and I got married, we have pretty much always been students which means, we have always been poor. So, nearly all of our living room furniture was either free or came from a thrift store. I don't worry too much about home decor because we move so often and every living room has a different size and shape. However, our wonderful, free Ikea loveseat is looking pretty darn yucky. I have plans to recover it but I need some advice because I have discovered that my interior decorating skills are sorta lame. I do love to repaint and re-do our cheap stuff but sometimes I need some good ideas. I've looked at fabric at Joann's and I think I found one I like. Not sure though. have I mentioned that I'm not good at making decisions? Here are some pictures of my living room (no it is not clean. Don't pretend that your living room is clean every day) and the fabric I am looking at next to my couch cover and pillows. The desk in the corner will fit when we move the bookshelf over and it will hold our new computer. Please advise me! And if you see anything else that gives you ideas for me, feel free to share!

By the way, I know the baby doesn't really match the decor, but he's stayin' no matter what!

I love the red fabric! It's gorgeous! It classy yet pretty. Oh, and I would take the baby any day!

Ooh, how fun! I love the fabric, but I would be worried that even the bits of white on that might get toddler-fingerprints. I can see the loveseat in a deep red with that fabric as pillows, but then again, I am obsessed with red couches! Have fun!

Heather my love. I don't know about the couch because I'm not good at these things either, but I have to say, a laptop on the couch = not a messy living room. That is all.

Okay here's my advice...fabric is expensive, especially at Joann's even with a coupon! Walmart is cheaper, but to cover a whole couch is pretty expensive. It's actually cheaper to buy a couch cover (in store or online); and it's pretty hard to cover a couch and have it look nice! I'm not trying to discourage you, though, I'm all for do-it-yourself stuff!

PS - I do like the fabric you picked!

We had a couch we recovered with a similar print fabric (except it was blue instead of red). It got really dirty looking really quickly. I would recommend a fabric that is washable and then just make a fitted slipcover. Then you can wash it when it gets anything on it. If you don't want to do the slipcover, recovering is still a good option. I have done both. If the fabric is scotch guarded and you can re-scotch guard it as it gets cleaned, then it won't be as bad for recovering. If you need help with any of it (if you are doing it soon) I have experience and only live a few blocks away!

These are all concerns that I have had too. Especially since I am not a seamstress! We have recovered a couch before and it worked well but we didn't use expensive fabric. Laura, I may take you up on that help! Alex, let me explain the state of my living room. I wrote this post throughout the day and when I wrote about it being messy, it was! I had a chance to pick up before I took the pictures (most of it's in a pile in the hallway).
